Finding the Cause of a Blocked Ensuite Sewer
Our team attended a property in Padstow NSW 2211 after the sewer servicing the ensuite bathroom became blocked.
The drain was initially cleared to restore flow, but further investigation identified the underlying problem: a section of sewer pipe was broken and tree roots had entered through the damaged area.
Clearing the roots could temporarily unblock the drain, but it wouldn't repair the broken pipe. Without addressing the damaged section, roots could continue entering the sewer and cause further blockages.
The affected pipe was located beside the house beneath a concrete pathway and directly below the property's hot water system, making access an important part of the repair.
Moving the Hot Water System to Access the Sewer
Before excavation could begin, the existing hot water system needed to be temporarily moved.
The water and power supplies were isolated, the storage tank drained and the unit carefully relocated away from the work area.
Temporary connections were established so the household could continue to have hot water while the sewer repair and concrete reinstatement were completed.
This provided the access required without unnecessarily replacing or compromising the existing hot water system.
Removing and Replacing the Broken Sewer Pipe
With the area clear, a concrete saw and jackhammer were used to remove the section of pathway directly above the damaged sewer.
The ground was excavated and the broken section of pipe exposed. Once removed, new 100mm sewer-grade PVC pipework and fittings were installed to reconstruct the sewer line.
Replacing the damaged pipe removed the opening through which the tree roots had been entering, rather than simply clearing the roots and leaving the structural defect behind.
Protecting the New Sewer Beneath the Pathway
Because the sewer runs beneath a concrete pathway and the normal position of the hot water system, the replacement pipework was concrete encased to provide additional protection and stability.
The excavation was then backfilled and compacted before the pathway was reinstated with new concrete.
Once the concrete had cured, our plumbers returned the hot water system to its original position, reconnected the services and tested the completed installation.
Why Tree Root Blockages Can Keep Coming Back
Tree roots inside a sewer are often a symptom of damaged pipework rather than the original problem.
Roots can enter through cracks, breaks and failed joints in search of moisture. Once inside, they can grow through the pipe and catch toilet paper and waste, eventually creating another blockage.
This is why repeatedly clearing a root-affected sewer may not provide a permanent solution when the pipe itself is damaged.
For this Padstow property, locating and replacing the broken section addressed the source of the recurring problem while retaining the surrounding sewer infrastructure that remained serviceable.
