Improving Drainage Beneath the House
Our team attended a property in Davidson to install a new subfloor drainage collection system and investigate the existing terracotta stormwater drainage.
The project involved excavating beneath the house, installing a new drainage pit and subsoil collection line, and connecting the new system to an existing pit near the pool pump.
Additional works were carried out along the right-hand side of the property, where the existing terracotta stormwater pipe needed to be exposed for CCTV inspection and drain cleaning.
Excavating Beneath the House for a New Drainage Pit
The first stage involved excavating soil beneath the house to create space for the new drainage installation.
A section of rock also needed to be broken out and removed to accommodate the new pit.
Once the excavation was complete, the new drainage pit was positioned, levelled and secured with concrete.
This established a collection point for water beneath the house before the new subsoil drainage was connected.
Installing the Subfloor Collection Drain
A new subsoil collection drain was installed through the excavated area and connected into the drainage pit.
The trench was then filled with 8–10mm blue metal aggregate, creating a permeable drainage zone around the collection line.
This allows water moving through the surrounding ground to enter the drainage system and flow towards the pit.
A new PVC outlet pipe was also installed from the drainage pit across to the existing pit near the pool pump.
This connected the new subfloor collection system to the property's existing drainage infrastructure.
Accessing the Existing Terracotta Stormwater Pipe
The second part of the project involved investigating an existing terracotta stormwater line along the right-hand side of the house.
Pavers were removed near the channel drain before excavation continued down to the underground pipework.
Once the terracotta pipe was exposed, the existing branch connection could be located.
The stormwater line was then cut to provide access, and a new inspection opening was installed.
This created a dedicated access point for drain cleaning, CCTV inspections and future maintenance.
Jet Blasting and CCTV Inspection of the Stormwater Drain
With access established, high-pressure water jetting was carried out to clean and clear the existing stormwater pipework.
A CCTV drain camera was then used to inspect the accessible drainage and help identify the routes of the underground pipes.
This provided a clearer understanding of the existing stormwater layout without excavating the entire drainage network.
The supplied project notes do not specify any particular defects identified during the CCTV inspection.
Reinstating the Courtyard and Completing the Drainage Works
Once the subfloor drainage installation and stormwater investigation were complete, the excavated areas were backfilled.
The courtyard pavers removed to access the terracotta stormwater line were reinstated.
The completed project provided a new subfloor water collection system connected to the existing drainage, along with improved access to the terracotta stormwater pipe for future inspections and maintenance.
