Gas Heater Installation & Flue Upgrade Randwick

Gas Heater Installation & Flue Upgrade in Randwick NSW 2031

Assessing the Existing Gas and Flue Connections

We attended this Randwick NSW 2031 property where the client wanted their existing gas heater replaced with a new client-supplied unit. While the heater itself was changing, a safe installation required more than simply disconnecting the old appliance and putting the new one in its place.

Our licensed gas fitter assessed the existing gas connection, copper pipework, chimney and flue arrangement to determine what needed to be upgraded for the replacement heater. Particular attention was given to the gas isolation point and the route used to carry combustion gases safely from the heater to outside the home.

The assessment identified that the existing copper connection and flue arrangement would be replaced as part of the installation. Roof access was also required so the existing chimney cowl could be removed and a suitable new flue terminal installed.

This allowed the new heater to be treated as a complete gas appliance installation, with the gas supply, appliance connection, flue and surrounding opening considered together.

Safe Gas Delivery and Effective Flue Performance

Gas heaters rely on two critical systems working correctly: they need a secure and controlled gas supply for combustion, and the resulting combustion gases need a suitable pathway to discharge outside.

  • Gas Supply & Isolation: Before work began, the gas supply was isolated and the existing heater safely disconnected. The old copper pipework serving the appliance was removed and a new gas ball valve installed inside the chimney. Providing an accessible isolation valve allows the heater's gas supply to be shut off independently when servicing or future replacement is required.

  • Flexible Hose Connection: A new approved gas flexible hose was installed to provide the final connection to the client-supplied heater. This arrangement accommodates the appliance connection while maintaining a secure gas supply when installed correctly.

  • Flue System Upgrade: Just as importantly, the flue system was upgraded rather than relying on the previous heater's arrangement. A new flexible flue was installed through the existing chimney and connected to the replacement heater.

  • Roof & Chimney Terminal Works: Our team accessed the roof space and chimney, removed the existing cowl, and installed a new flue terminal at the chimney exit. The terminal was carefully sealed where it passes through the existing chimney opening. This protects the penetration from weather while providing the new heater with a defined route for combustion gases to discharge externally.

  • Testing & Commissioning: Once the gas and flue connections were complete, the installation was tested and commissioned to confirm correct operation.

Finishing the Fireplace Opening

Replacing an older heater with a different model can leave visible gaps between the appliance and the original fireplace or chimney opening.

Rather than leaving these areas unfinished, a new infill panel was installed around the heater. This provided a cleaner transition between the new appliance and the existing opening while closing unnecessary gaps around the installation.

The completed work area was then cleaned and all installation rubbish and redundant materials removed from the property.

The Long-Term Value: Upgrading Infrastructure Around the Appliance

The long-term value of this Randwick project comes from upgrading the components that support the heater, rather than focusing only on the appliance itself:

  • Improved Serviceability: Replacing unsuitable or redundant pipework and installing a dedicated gas isolation valve creates a more serviceable gas connection for the future. If maintenance is required later, the appliance can be isolated easily without unnecessary disturbance to surrounding infrastructure.

  • Enhanced Safety: A gas heater produces combustion gases during operation, so correctly directing those gases outside is fundamental. Installing a new flue and terminal specifically as part of the replacement avoids relying unnecessarily on ageing components associated with the previous heater.

  • Preserving Property Structure: Making use of the existing chimney provided a practical route for the new flue while preserving the established structure of the property. Combined with the new infill panel, this allowed the heater upgrade to integrate neatly with the existing fireplace without requiring unnecessary structural alteration.

The result is a considered gas heater installation built around safe gas delivery, effective flueing, future serviceability, and preservation of the existing chimney structure.
