Updating the Gas and Hot Water Services at the Property
Our team attended a property in McMahons Point NSW 2060 to carry out changes to the existing gas and hot water infrastructure.
The scope involved modifications to the property's gas supply, including relocating the gas meter and isolating gas services that were no longer required, together with replacing the existing gas hot water system with a 315-litre electric hot water system.
The work required coordination across the existing gas, water and electrical services to establish the new arrangement while safely dealing with redundant connections.
Relocating the Gas Meter to the Front of the Property
The existing gas meter and regulator were relocated from their previous position to the front garden bed, where they could be mounted on a new galvanised steel post.
A dedicated gas isolation valve was incorporated into the main branch serving the house.
Approximately 14 metres of new 20mm copper gas pipework was required to connect the existing gas feed beneath the house to the relocated meter.
A further 6 metres of 20mm copper pipework was installed between the relocated meter and the existing fireplace gas connection.
The new pipework was secured and bracketed throughout the installation before the gas service was tested.
Capping the Gas Services No Longer Required
As part of the changes to the gas installation, connections that were no longer required could be safely terminated rather than leaving redundant services connected.
The existing gas pipework supplying the cooktop, hot water system and gas bayonet was capped, while the gas connection serving the fireplace was retained.
The gas installation was then leak tested following the alterations, with the required gas compliance documentation completed for the finished work.
Replacing the Gas Hot Water System with Electric
The existing gas hot water system at the rear of the property was isolated, drained and removed.
A new 315-litre Rheem electric hot water system was installed within the subfloor basement area. A level concrete plinth provided the base for the new unit, with a galvanised steel drip tray installed beneath the tank.
The installation also included a duo isolation valve and hot water tempering valve.
Existing water services were modified to accommodate the new position, with new 15mm copper pipework and fittings connecting the replacement tank to the home's hot and cold water lines.
Electrical conduit and wiring from the main switchboard were completed by a licensed electrician to provide power to the new electric hot water system.
Completing the McMahons Point Service Upgrade
Once the new services were installed, the gas and water connections were tested and the new hot water system commissioned.
The project changed how both services operated across the property: the gas meter was relocated, redundant gas connections were capped, the fireplace gas supply was retained, and the previous gas hot water system was replaced with a new electric unit.
This allowed the existing services to be reorganised around the property's updated requirements without replacing gas infrastructure that was still needed.
