Investigating a Leaking Toilet in Room 406
Our team attended a property in Haymarket following a report of a leaking toilet cistern in Room 406.
Upon inspection, the existing ceramic cistern was found to be cracked and required replacement.
Rather than replacing the entire toilet suite, the work focused on installing a matching Caroma ceramic cistern and renewing the associated flushing components, seals and water connections.
Why the Cracked Cistern Needed Replacing
Unlike a leaking inlet valve or worn internal seal, a crack in the ceramic body of a toilet cistern can allow water to escape from the unit itself.
In this case, the visible damage meant replacing the cistern was the appropriate repair.
The replacement was selected to match the existing toilet installation, allowing the toilet pan to remain in place while the damaged cistern was removed.
Removing the Damaged Ceramic Cistern
Before removing the existing cistern, the water supply was isolated and the remaining water drained.
The existing water connection and cistern fixing bolts were then disconnected, allowing the cracked ceramic unit to be removed.
With the old cistern out of the way, the toilet was prepared for the replacement unit and new connecting components.
Installing the New Caroma Cistern and Flushing Components
A new Caroma ceramic toilet cistern was supplied and installed to suit the existing toilet pan.
The installation included several new components:
-
Inlet valve: Controls water entering the cistern after flushing.
-
Outlet valve: Releases water from the cistern during a flush.
-
Fixing bolts: Secure the replacement cistern to the toilet.
-
Close-coupled pan seal: Seals the connection between the cistern and toilet pan.
-
Water isolation valve: Allows the cistern's water supply to be shut off for future maintenance.
Replacing these components alongside the ceramic cistern provided a complete new flushing assembly rather than retaining the old internal fittings.
Testing the New Toilet Cistern
Once the replacement cistern was secured and connected to the water supply, the installation was tested and commissioned.
The testing checked the operation of the flushing mechanism and the new water connections.
Installation waste was removed and the work area cleaned following completion.
The completed repair addressed the cracked ceramic cistern while retaining the existing toilet pan and renewing the components required for the replacement installation.
