Stormwater & Subsoil Drainage Installation in Old Toongabbie

Improving Drainage Around the Garden Bed and Retaining Wall

Our team attended a property in Old Toongabbie to improve stormwater and subsoil drainage within a garden bed alongside an existing retaining wall.

The project involved replacing an existing 300mm stormwater pit, installing new PVC stormwater pipework and adding subsoil drainage throughout the landscaped area.

The aim was to improve how surface water and water moving through the soil could be collected and directed into the drainage system.

Replacing the Existing Stormwater Pit

The first stage involved removing the existing 300mm surface drainage pit and installing a new pit in its place.

New stormwater pipework was then installed towards the retaining wall, with PVC junctions added to connect the drainage components.

The replacement pit provided a collection point for surface runoff, while the new pipework established a drainage pathway through the garden bed area.

Installing Subsoil Drainage Through the Garden Bed

Alongside the surface drainage improvements, new subsoil drainage lines were installed throughout the garden bed.

Unlike the surface pit, which collects water at ground level, the subsoil drainage is designed to collect excess water moving through the surrounding soil.

Additional geotextile fabric was installed around the drainage system to help prevent soil and fine particles from entering the drainage material.

Aggregate was then placed around the subsoil drainage lines, creating a free-draining area that allows water to move towards the pipes.

This was particularly relevant to the garden bed's position alongside the retaining wall, where managing water within the surrounding soil was an important part of the drainage upgrade.

Jet Blasting the Existing Drainage Lines

As part of the project, our team also carried out complimentary high-pressure jet blasting of the drainage lines.

This helped clear obstructions within the existing drainage and improve the pathway for water moving through the connected system.

Cleaning the existing lines complemented the new installation by addressing potential restrictions in the drainage already serving the property.

Testing the Drainage and Reinstating the Garden

Once the new stormwater pit, PVC pipework and subsoil drainage were installed, the completed system was tested and commissioned.

Excavated soil and excess material were removed to a skip bin, and the mulch that had been set aside during the works was reinstated across the garden bed.

The area was then tidied, leaving the new drainage installed beneath the landscaped surface.

The completed project combined surface stormwater collection and below-ground drainage to help manage water around the garden bed and retaining wall.
