When people think about installing a rainwater tank, they usually focus on the tank itself.

A typical residential rainwater tank can hold several thousand litres of water. Because one litre of water weighs approximately one kilogram, a 5,000-litre tank can weigh more than five tonnes when full, before you even account for the weight of the tank itself.
That's a tremendous amount of weight sitting in one location every day of the year.
If the supporting slab begins to crack, settle or move, that weight is transferred into the tank walls, connected pipework and fittings.

Rainwater tanks are designed to store water—not compensate for unstable foundations.
Even small amounts of movement beneath the tank can create uneven loading across the base.
Instead of the weight being distributed evenly, certain areas begin carrying far more load than others.
As the tank fills and empties over time, that uneven support places additional stress on the tank walls and the plumbing connected to it.

Preparing the Site Before Any Concrete Was Poured
Constructing a new slab beneath an existing rainwater tank required considerably more planning than simply pouring fresh concrete.
The existing inlet and overflow pipework first needed to be disconnected so the tank could be safely removed without damaging the surrounding stormwater infrastructure.
With the tank temporarily relocated, our team could inspect the existing foundation and assess how the new slab would integrate with the surrounding concrete.
Rather than pouring over the original surface, the objective was to create a purpose-built foundation capable of supporting the considerable weight of a full water tank over the long term.
Why Reinforcement Matters
Concrete is exceptionally strong when compressed.
Where it benefits from additional support is when resisting movement and cracking caused by changing loads.
That's why reinforced concrete is used for structural applications.
For this project, timber formwork was installed before steel reinforcing bars were mechanically fixed into the existing concrete.
Connecting the new slab to the existing structure helps improve continuity between the two sections and reduces the likelihood of one slab moving independently of the other.
Steel reinforcing mesh was then installed throughout the new slab before the concrete was poured.
Together, the reinforcement and concrete work as a single structural element capable of supporting the significant static weight of the rainwater tank.
Building a Foundation Designed to Last
The new slab measured approximately 2.7 metres long by 1.45 metres wide, providing a stable platform suited to the footprint of the existing tank.
Our team used 25 MPa structural concrete, a material commonly specified for applications requiring reliable strength and durability.
While the finished slab appears relatively simple, every part of its construction contributes to the long-term performance of the rainwater harvesting system.
The slab must remain level.
It must distribute weight evenly.
It must resist settlement.
And it must continue performing through years of changing weather conditions and fluctuating water levels.
These are the details that determine whether a rainwater tank continues operating reliably decades into the future.
Reconnecting the Rainwater System
Once the concrete had cured sufficiently, the temporary formwork was removed and the rainwater tank was carefully repositioned onto its new foundation.
The inlet and overflow pipework were then reconnected, restoring the rainwater harvesting system to normal operation.
Every connection was tested to confirm the pipework remained secure and that water could enter and leave the tank correctly without leaks.
Although much of the work had taken place beneath the tank, proper commissioning remained an important part of the project.
Why a Strong Foundation Protects More Than the Tank
A reinforced slab doesn't just support the tank.
It also protects the entire plumbing system connected to it.
When a rainwater tank settles unevenly, connected pipework can begin twisting under load.
Flexible fittings become strained.
Overflow pipes may lose their correct alignment.
