The new installation began with a purpose-built LPG bottle station positioned within the loading bay.

The cylinders were installed on concrete pads and securely restrained before protective bollards were positioned where required to help shield the installation from accidental vehicle impacts.

Loading bays are busy environments where forklifts, deliveries and equipment movement occur daily.

Providing physical protection around the gas installation is therefore just as important as the pipework itself.

From the bottle station, a dedicated LPG regulator was installed to reduce and control gas pressure before distribution throughout the building.

Why Gas Regulators Matter

An LPG cylinder stores gas at pressures far higher than most appliances can safely use.

The regulator acts as the control point between the storage cylinders and the equipment inside the laboratory.

Rather than allowing pressure to fluctuate as cylinder conditions change, the regulator delivers a stable and controlled gas supply to the downstream pipework.

Without correct regulation, even perfectly installed gas pipework cannot reliably supply specialised laboratory equipment.

Routing Gas Through a Commercial Building

Once the regulator had been installed, new copper gas pipework was routed between the loading bay and the laboratory.

Commercial gas pipework needs to do more than simply reach its destination.

It must also remain protected throughout its service life.

Pipe supports were installed at appropriate intervals to minimise movement and vibration, while wall and brick penetrations were carefully completed to maintain the integrity of the surrounding building.

All newly installed gas pipework was permanently labelled so the service could be easily identified during future maintenance or emergency situations.

Why Isolation Valves Are Essential

A dedicated gas isolation valve was installed immediately before the laboratory appliance.

This allows the individual appliance to be isolated without shutting down the entire gas installation.

That becomes particularly valuable when laboratory equipment requires servicing, maintenance or replacement.

Instead of disrupting the complete LPG system, technicians can safely isolate only the appliance being worked on while leaving the remainder of the installation unaffected.

It's a relatively simple component, but one that significantly improves both safety and operational flexibility.

Testing Comes Before Commissioning

Installing gas pipework is only part of the project.

Before the new LPG service could be placed into operation, the complete installation underwent comprehensive gas pressure and integrity testing.

Pressure testing verifies that:

  • Every connection is gas tight.
  • The pipework maintains pressure correctly.
  • The installation is capable of safely supplying the appliance.
  • No leaks are present anywhere within the new system.

Only after the installation successfully passed testing could the commissioning process continue.

Compliance Doesn't End When the Pipework Is Finished

One of the most important parts of this project happened after the installation itself.

Because the laboratory equipment was classified as a Type B appliance, specialist inspection and certification formed part of the overall delivery process.
