Managing Water Pressure Outside the Home and Inside the Plumbing System
Our team attended a property in Narellan to complete two important plumbing upgrades. The first involved renewing deteriorated stormwater drainage across the front garden and rear paved walkway. The second involved installing a new pressure regulating valve to control the pressure entering the home's water supply.
At first, these may sound like unrelated jobs. In reality, both were about managing water before it could place unnecessary stress on the property.
Outside the home, uncontrolled stormwater can saturate soil, damage landscaping and affect paved areas. Inside the home, excessive mains pressure can place continual strain on taps, flexible hoses, toilets, appliances and the hot water system.

Water Can Damage a Property in Two Very Different Ways
Most homeowners think about water problems only when they see a leak or a flooded area.
However, water can create damage without an obvious emergency.
Stormwater may slowly saturate garden beds, undermine paving or erode soil around drainage routes. High mains pressure may gradually wear out tap cartridges, valves and flexible connectors long before a major leak appears.
Neither issue necessarily causes immediate failure. Instead, the stress builds over time.
This project focused on removing that stress at both ends of the plumbing system: safely directing rainwater away from the property and controlling the pressure of the water entering the home.
Renewing the Front Stormwater Drainage
Sections of the existing stormwater system servicing the front garden had deteriorated and were no longer providing reliable runoff collection and discharge.
Excavation was carried out through soft soil and clay to expose the affected drainage route and make room for new stormwater pipework.
One of the main challenges was working around established trees. Underground roots can interfere with old pipework, but careless excavation can also damage healthy trees and surrounding landscaping.
Rather than forcing the new drainage through the existing root zone, the pipe route was carefully diverted around the trees. This helped protect the landscaping while reducing the chance of future root-related drainage problems.
The new line was installed with the correct fall so stormwater could continue moving under gravity toward the street.
Why Correct Drainage Fall Matters
Stormwater pipes do not rely on pumps in most residential installations. They rely on gravity.
That means the pipe must be laid at a consistent gradient from the collection point to the outlet.
If the fall is too shallow or uneven, water may sit inside the pipe instead of draining away. Sediment and organic debris can then collect in those low points, gradually restricting the system.
Correct fall helps the new drainage line clear itself more effectively during rainfall and reduces the likelihood of ongoing water retention underground.
For this Narellan drainage renewal, the trench and pipe route were prepared specifically to maintain reliable flow toward the council kerb connection.
Adding a Stormwater Overflow Pit
A new stormwater overflow pit was incorporated into the upgraded system.
A pit provides a collection and access point within the drainage network. During heavy rain, it helps receive runoff before directing it into the underground stormwater line.
It also gives plumbers a practical location for future inspection and maintenance.
This is important because drainage systems should not only work when first installed. They should also remain accessible if cleaning, testing or repairs are needed years later.
The new pit improved the system's ability to manage stormwater while making the drainage network easier to maintain.
Connecting the System to the Council Kerb
The renewed stormwater drainage was connected to a new outlet at the council kerb.
A drainage system is only useful when the collected water has a suitable destination. Without an effective outlet, water may simply be transferred from one part of the property to another.
The kerb connection provides a controlled discharge point, allowing stormwater from the property to enter the street drainage system rather than pooling within gardens or paved areas.
Once completed, the new connection was tested to confirm water could move freely from the property through to the kerb outlet.
Replacing Drainage Beneath the Rear Paved Walkway
Further stormwater renewal was completed beneath the rear paved walkway.
Drainage problems beneath paving can remain hidden for a long time. Water may slowly wash away bedding material, contribute to movement or create damp areas around the edges before a clear failure becomes visible.
The ageing pipework beneath the walkway was replaced to restore reliable stormwater flow and reduce the risk of water affecting the surrounding paved surface.
Working beneath established paving requires careful excavation and reinstatement. The aim is to access and replace the failed infrastructure while limiting unnecessary disturbance to the finished area above.
The Other Water Problem Was Inside the Home
While the stormwater works addressed rainfall outside the property, the incoming water service required a different type of protection.
The home's mains water pressure was assessed and identified as requiring better control.
High water pressure can feel like a benefit at the tap, but excessive pressure is not necessarily good for the plumbing system.
Every time a tap is closed, an appliance valve shuts or a toilet cistern finishes filling, the internal plumbing experiences a change in pressure. When the incoming pressure is too high, these everyday events place greater stress on fittings and components throughout the home.
Over time, excessive pressure may contribute to:
- Dripping or prematurely worn taps
- Failed flexible hoses
- Noisy pipework
- Toilet inlet valve problems
- Appliance connection leaks
- Increased strain on hot water components
A pressure regulating valve helps prevent this by controlling the pressure before water travels through the rest of the property.
How a Pressure Regulating Valve Protects the Plumbing
A new adjustable right-angle pressure regulating valve, commonly called a PRV, was installed on the property's 20mm incoming water service.
The existing pipework was modified to create the correct position for the valve. Once installed, the water supply was restored and the PRV adjusted to provide a suitable operating pressure throughout the home.
The valve automatically reduces higher incoming mains pressure to a controlled downstream level.
This helps provide more consistent performance at taps and fixtures while reducing unnecessary mechanical stress across the plumbing network.
A PRV does not increase water pressure. Its purpose is to prevent excessive pressure from entering the property.
Why Pressure Regulation Is Preventative Maintenance
Homeowners often replace leaking taps or failed hoses without considering why those parts wore out.
In some properties, repeated fixture failures may be linked to the pressure entering the home rather than the quality of each individual fitting.
Replacing damaged components may solve the immediate leak, but controlling the incoming pressure addresses one possible cause of repeated wear.
Installing a PRV can help protect:
