Great tips for staying water wise in the heat
As the mercury soars it's tempting to sit under a sprinkler in a shady spot all day just to get some relief from the heat. We definitely advocate staying as cool as possible, but don't forget to be mindful of your water usage in the process.
Even though Sydneysiders are using similar amounts of water compared to when level 3 restrictions were in place ten years ago it pays to stay vigilant with a long hot summer ahead of us.
Water-saving tips from Pure Plumbing Professionals
- Take shorter showers (even if they're only shorter by minutes), you're not washing sheets, you don't need a 4-minute rinse.
- Use the short or eco setting on the dishwasher and make sure it's full before starting a wash.
- Use the quick wash cycle when washing clothes.
- Water plants during the evening or early morning to reduce water loss from evaporation.
- Sweep driveways, paths, and patios rather than using the hose to clean off.
- Utilise pool covers if you have them to reduce water loss and chemical use.
- Invest in water-saving appliances, tapware, and showerheads.
- Repair leaking taps and toilets promptly. If you book before 10 we can usually get to you the same business day to repair the leaks.
- Use the half flush - No, it doesn't make you any less of a man.
- If you like to watch water flow while you brush your teeth install a little fountain, don't let the tap run while you brush.
- Everyone loves the garden to grow nice and green but if your garden is looking sad and dry except in one spot you might have a leak in the water pipe which could be wasting many litres of water each day.
Quick test - turn off all the taps in and around your home and check the meter reading, come back an hour or so later and check again. If the meter has ticked over you could have a leaky pipe give your plumber a call as soon as possible. - Cut the grass a bit longer until it cools down. Taller grass shades roots and retain water better.
- Wash the car on the grass if possible and use a trigger spray on the hose for rinsing off.
- Put the plug in. Whether you're washing veggies or the dishes, using a sink full of water is more efficient than running the tap.
