Dripping washing machine tap, silent water damage
The silent destroyer of cabinets, flooring and walls, a dripping washing machine tap can wreak havoc in your laundry unnoticed for weeks on end. Sometimes only being discovered once the damage is done.
Many modern laundry designs hide the washing machine taps inside a cabinet or under the laundry sink for aesthetic reasons or as a space saver. This may be a great idea for the look of the laundry (we're in there all the time it might as well be pleasing to look at) however, it's not such a great choice when it comes to spotting dripping taps.
Of course, diligent homeowners will periodically check these things but most of us don't give it a thought until the cupboards start to swell up. Which of course, is too late.
As we mentioned above, unchecked water leaks from the washing machine hose, taps or connectors can result in swollen cupboards, however, that's just the beginning of the problems which can occur. A water leak, even a small one, can gradually seep into the adjoining walls causing plaster to flake and timber to rot.
The damp environment created by the leak can also lead to mould and mildew growth as well as creating a perfect humid environment for termites.
It doesn't have to be all doom and gloom in the laundry, carrying out a few quick checks can prevent all that potential destruction.
Easy plumbing check one
Take a look at the back and base of laundry cabinets every time you're getting the washing detergent out, reaching for the bug spray or searching for the dustpan. Check for any damp spots, discolouration or swelling, it only takes a second but could mean catching leaking taps before they cause too much damage.
Easy plumbing check two
Anytime you need to call the plumber in for a job, whether it's for a new shower head or to unblock a drain pipe, have a whip around the house checking all the taps, including those you don't usually see like the washing machine, dishwasher and toilet taps. Any taps that are difficult to turn off or on could need a new washer or other simple repairs. Combining jobs is one of the best ways to save on plumber visits, plus it means you're actively staying ahead of possible issues.
Easy plumbing check three
Book in a yearly plumber check. We know what you're thinking, "Pfft, why would I do that?". Before you write this check off, think about it for a moment. Emergency plumbing repairs can become costly. Often homeowners leave problems, whether they know about them or not until they become major issues instead of simple repairs.
Your plumber can review all the plumbing systems and fixtures throughout your home identifying any potential problems before they become bigger repairs.
