Which plumbing work requires a Notice of Work?
You may hear the term 'Notice of Work' used when plumbing jobs are being discussed in Sydney. It sounds serious but it is just a way for regulatory authorities to ensure all plumbing work meets the relevant state and Australian standards. These processes make sure your delicately balanced plumbing systems work the way they should, ie move the clean fresh water in and allow wastewater to exit efficiently.
What is Notice of Work (NoW)?
A Notice of Work is a form that identifies the plumbing work to be carried out as well as the details of the licenced tradesperson carrying out the work. The form must be completed and submitted to NSW Fair Trading by your plumber before the work starts.
Your plumber must also apply for an audit inspection from NSW Fair Trading so the work can be checked once it is finished.
Once the work is complete your plumber will submit a Certificate of Compliance to NSW Fair Trading, of which the plumber keeps a copy, and you are issued with a copy.
Types of work that requires a Notice of Work
- construction, maintenance, or alteration of any plumbing or drainage infrastructure up to the point of connection to
- a water supply (public water supply, water tank, etc)
- a public sewerage network
- a septic tank*
What does not require a Notice of Work?
- Minor plumbing work - such as swapping a tap fixture over for a similar fitting
- Emergency plumbing work
All of these processes are carried out automatically by your licenced plumber who will know the system inside out.
Any queries? Ask your plumber for more information about your specific job and the requirements for the work to be carried out.
