How does a solar hot water system heat water?

The three main components of a solar hot water heater are the solar collector, the heat transfer system, and a well-insulated storage tank.

The solar collector (flat panel or evacuated tube) is mounted on the roof, where it heats the water very efficiently by absorbing energy from the sun. Cold water from the storage tank, which is either located on the roof (close coupled) or on the ground outside your home (split system), is circulated through the solar collector, heating the water.

The heated water exits the solar collector and is then stored in the tank ready for use. The hot water rises to the top of the tank, and the colder water is taken from the bottom of the tank and the process is repeated.
