How to install a dishwasher
Do you need a plumber to install a dishwasher?
There are a few factors to consider when it comes to the installation of a dishwasher and depending on how much work is required, this usually determines how much or little you should actually do yourself.
Are you replacing a dishwasher?
In this case most all connections and power points will be existing so it is in fact possible to put it in yourself. Just make sure the replacement Dishwasher fits the existing cutout. Attaching the hoses may require the efforts of a licenced plumber however - DIY work can cause leaks and potential floods when fittings are not secured.

Are you installing a new dishwasher?
A brand new dishwasher requires a bit of planning and measuring up in order to make sure the space works for you into the future. This involves checking the space available for the Dishwasher to fill and whether the services required for a dishwasher to operate are available. These include
- Power outlets
- drainage pipes
- Water inputs, Hot & Cold
- Modern Dishwashers also need to be balanced properly to prevent rattling and damaging the surrounds.
- Cavity cutouts for access for power leads and piping
Things to consider when installing a dishwasher
- Power points and piping should not be installed in the same cabinet void
- Sealing benches to prevent steam damage
- Make sure there is a powerpoint installed behind the dishwasher cavity or an adjacent cavity
- Double check there is a correct tap outlet installed under the sink which can connect to your dishwasher
- Make sure you have a barbed spigot (drilled out) for the water to drain back into
- Drill suitable sized holes in your cabinetry cavity area to get inlet hose + power cable + drain hose through
- Checks for leaks during first few operations
- Make sure DW is fixed in place and the door springs are adjusted correctly
If you run into issues, don't persist with something that can cause issues into the future. A dishwasher is an investment. To get the most out of it, and to ensure it's working properly, you need a licensed plumber to take a look.
